Overview
▌OVERVIEW ▌
The Problem
1

Recording dreams is difficult for some users, because they think it takes too much time and efforts.

2

It's hard for users to find people who would like to share dreams with each other.

Project Vision

Ring Tracker can help users record dreams automatically, and its associated App can be used for reviewing, visualizing, analysing and sharing recorded dreams.

Challenges
1

Provide a product that can record users' dreams, but has no negative influence on users' sleep.

2

Provide a proper way to present/visualize users' dreams

Design Highlights

Put on your ring for tonight,

remember your dreams forever.

Create a tracker ring to record users' dreams while sleeping and the associated mobile app to review, visualize and analyse their dreams.

Research
▌RESEARCH ▌
Reserach Overview

I began the project by conducting research to get more information about how people think of dreams. I employed methods including Questionnaire and Interviews to collect data from users. Because of limited time, the total quantity of users surveyed was small, but it could also show somthing about what users were thingking.

Approaches to Collect Data
1

Questionnaire

Interviews

2

Empathic listening

Questionnaire

To understand general user behaviors and identify current trends and users preferences, I designed a questionnaire and collected 12 responses back. I analyzed and visualized the data and generated findings, which could help me uncover design opportunities and understand outstanding problems.

Insights

1

More than half of the participants have experience about recording dreams.

4

Participants would like to review dreams in an visualization way.

2

Diary, mobile Apps and social media are the most popular ways to record dreams.

5

Most participants would like to share their dreams.

3

Most participants who didn't record dreams thought it took too much efforts.

6

Participants would like to wear devices on wrist or finger to record their dreams while sleeping.

Tips_red.png

Recommendation

Create a device to help users record dreams with ease.

Wearing this device on user's wrist or finger could work.

Interviews

To gain further insights into users' opinions about dreams, I conducted user interviews with three of the participants who had taken the questionnaire. In order to better understand the potential users, I drew the interviewee spectrum.

1.png

Do you think it's important to record dreams?

Would you like to use a device to record your dreams automatically?

2.png

Do you think it's difficult to record dreams?

3.png

Will you share your dreams on social media?

Insights

1

Participants who didn't record dreams would like to do so if a device could record their dreams automatically.

2

More than half of the participants would like to share their dreams on social media. One participant would not like to share dreams even she always recorded.

Recommendation

Create a device with two different functions, recording dreams and sharing dreams.

Define
▌DEFINE ▌
Personas

I used themes concluded from questionnaire and interviews to create user personas representative of the attitudes of the participants. The personas contained basic information, goals, frustrations, and summary description that best represent the information I collected from our participants.

Henry
henry.png

“I think it's too much efforts

to record dreams every day."

    Goals

 • Record dreams in a simple or automatical way

 • Recording dreams shouldn't influence daily life

     Frustrations

 • Recording dreams by diary or mobile App may take too much time

 • It seems that recording dreams will not bring any benefits to him. It's a waste of time to him

Age: 25

Education: Master Degree

Hometown: Los Angeles, USA

Family: Single

Occupation: Investor

Henry is an investor working at a finicial company. He has a very busy work and has little time to think of other things. Recording dreams is a luxury for him. If a tool or a device can record his dreams automatically, he would like to try that and reviews his dream when he has time.

Sophia

“I’d like to be alone,

but I don't know why.”

    Goals

 • Make use of what she dreams to inspire her creation as a graphic designer

 • Share dreams with others on an online platform

    Frustrations

 • She may forget dreams after waking up every morning in a very short time, so that she can't record them

 • It's hard to find someone who would like to share dreams with her

Age: 35

Education: Bachelor Degree

Hometown: Shanghai, China

Family: Married, One Child

Occupation: Graphic Designer

Sophia is a graphic designer with one child. She records dreams every day and shares them with others. Her and others' dreams become inspirations for her design work. However, sometimes she fails to record because they go away quickly and it's hard to find someone sharing dreams with her. She hopes a tool could help her.

User Journey Map

To guide me further in design and visualize how Henry and Sophia would use standard ways to achieve their goals, recording dreams and sharing dreams with others, and identify areas of friction during their experience, I created experience maps.

Problem Statement

With the user journey, persona, and insights from the research stage, I turned my knowledge into Point Of View (POV) Statements to frame the problem from the user’s perspective.

1

Henry is an investor working at a fast-paced financial institution, who needs a device to help him record dreams quickly and automatically, because he has little time for recording dreams.

2

Sophia is a graphic designer using dreams for design inspiration, who needs a platform to share dreams with others, becauseshe would like to learn about others' interesting dreams.

Mind Map

With my research findings and personas in mind, I brainstormed solutions by drawing a mind map. I was trying to create a device to track and record users' dreams and an associated app presenting records. For the device, which part of body to occupied needs to be considered. And for the app, I'm trying to add different functions that users need, respectively, dream recording and community. Also, I'm considering how to visualize the dreams in the app.

Sketches for the Tracker Ring

According to my research results and the mind map, I decided to design a Tracker Ring with a sensor inside for tracking and recording dreams. The Tracker Ring should be flexible and easy to wear for different people.

According to the mind map, I came up with ideas about how the app works for users to review their records and share dreams with others. For this step, I was trying to create the layout of pages.

Takeaways
▌TAKEAWAYS ▌
Reflection

Even though this is a very quick and short-time project, I still started from user research. I believe empathy with users is the most important thing for a design product. However, there are some limitations for my user research, especially for the age of the participants. Most participants taking part in the research are 20 - 55 years old, which means their opinions can't fully express ideas from young generation and the aged.

Nextsteps

1.Do some research about materials which makes the tracker ring flexible.

2. Add interactive connections between pages.

3. Take user test to get some feedbacks from users and update the prototypes. This process may repeat several times.
